CHANGELOG
Short story of Jspell
Jspell is an open source morphologic analyzer for UNIX based systems, Ispell based, that allows processing through different interfaces, morphologic analyze or spell-checking text. Strongly orientated for text/word processing of Portuguese language.
Jspell along with the dictionary was developed in 1994 by Ulisses Pinto and José João Almeida. Jspell names comes from I+1.
Dictionary characteristics
The dictionaries don't pretend to cover all the Portuguese vocabulary, just the frequent words. Words which terminology is to much specific and rare, are not included in the dictionary.
Advantages to this path is for warranty a more efficient use of resources used by the spelling applications, in relation to their performance, memory usage, suggestions quality in case of error, real error detection (e.g. árvore (very frequent common name) , arvore (very rare verbal mode)
Portuguese dictionary (Jspell in 1995), morphologically annotated, was built by word extraction of academic material from Minho University, like PhD and Msc thesis, journalistic corpora from Portugal freely available, public name lists, and a lot of material with no copyright associated. On a second phase, most changes were made by the authors, manual consult of “frequent spelling mistakes” books and definition dictionaries, word frequency lists, user suggestions, crossing and validation of word with external entities collaborations.
