Mine is plain old evil. He'll be doing this in PHP (which means his bot won't live for more than 30 seconds), I'll be doing this in..

Java.

Yes. And not only that. I'll be writing the Java in Eclipse. An IDE.

Get ready, world.

First, look at this:

Then notice, taking into consideration that this link is 10mbit half duplex, that it manages to do 1.4MB/sec sustained over the course of an hour. How the hell is that possible?

The reason for this sudden increase in traffic (thank goodness for free bandwidth..) is that I mirrored a movie by the recently murdered filmmaker/columnist Theo van Gogh: Submission. His film critiques the Islam, and some extremist figured he should die because of that.

If this continues, I'll have to go ask for 100mbit instead of 10 or my fellow students won't have any bandwidth left... Also interesting is how I never published the location of this mirror anywhere. I have no idea how people found it. I'm not going to link it here, at least not until I get more bandwidth. Search if you want it.

US Elections

Aurelien Jarno posted this in his blog:

But maybe the question is why US elections is so important for European people. Maybe Europe is not enough united to be an alternative to the US power...

Now, his comments form is closed so I'm just going to comment through a trackback. It is true that the EU isn't as united as the US are. But the US being the United States of America and the EU just being a European Union has something to do with this. The countries in Europe are each older than the US in its entirety. Europeans discovered America. All this happened while the european countries were just that: separate countries, just laying there together in a region we call Europe. We don't want to change that like the US did long ago. Dutch people are primarily Dutch. Being a European comes second.

As for the US elections, I don't really understand why we care as much about them as we do our own elections. It probably has something to do with the US being a large country. And large countries can have a big influence on other, smaller countries. So I guess we just want to know who we're dealing with. And of course hope it's not that cowboy.

Today is the day of the madness in the US. They finally get to try again. Let's all hope they get it right.

I don't care much for the US, but still I do hope Bush gets thrown out. Preferably literally. You see, I do care for the rest of the world. And Bush seems to have that reversed.

Anyway. Polls have shown (multiple times, actually) that most people want Kerry up there. I don't think that's entirely true. What people want is not bush. That basically means anyone but him will suffice.

I hope something good comes out of this day. The benefits are obvious if Bush loses of course. I hope however if he wins in a similar manner to how he did four years ago, the Americans finally realise their voting system is stupid and they replace it with the proper way of voting as we Europeans have done it for so long.

Another Tim has noted this in his blog.
My guess would have been that to Americans, the US and Canada are "the world". They probably think that "jurop-thing" is on another planet.

Note to americans: Don't take this too offensively. You know we like to mock you, right? Hell, I know you like to mock yourselves ;)

And out of thin air, Planet Botfu was born. Which basically just means I figured out how to use arch (which is truly a pain compared to cvs), managed to get Planet out of it, and then set it up. I'm sure arch is really nice and all, but if setting up the software you just got takes less time than getting it, something is wrong.

Anyway. Now that I have two feeds, it's only a matter of time before we (that is, Tim and me) harrass the other #botfu folks into starting a blog and making that available through RSS.

Be warned, you.

Playfair, enabling your Fair Use of music.

So, there's this little app called
Playfair
, that strips iTunes Music Store AACs of their encryption, enabling you to play the files on computers that can't run iTunes, and on AAC-enabled devices that aren't iPods. Apple, of course, doesn't like this.

Apple then proceeded to have it pulled off Sourceforge, because the US has this DMCA thingy to protect businesses from the evil consumers they make products for. I'm not surprised that Sourceforge had to pull it - they are on US soil, after all. I am surprised, however, that Sarovar, an Indian sourceforge-alike that became the new home of the project, pulled it. The Cease and Desist letter Ppple had sent to them consisted basically of bullshit.

It's gone now, you say. Nope. The day it disappeared from Sarovar, I ran into it. I saw this coming, so I mirrored it. There is no law in the Netherlands that prevents you from excercising your right to fair use of copyrighted works, so it should be available for some time to come.

You can find it here. Remember, making music available for download without paying to do so is illegal, so keep it to yourself. Also, if you're on US territory you can't legally use it.

It would seem that two days ago, some guy, tri-letterized as ESR, thought it'd be a good idea to create an emblem for the entire hacker community. While I agree that having such a thing might be a good idea, he could have at least asked that same community if they agreed with him about the emblem.

Let me show it to you:

Clickable to get to the page he made about it. In my opinion, it sucks. If you need to write a webpage about an emblem to explain what it means, you should consider stepping out of the emblem-making-business. In fact, I think this pretty much says enough: "About half the hackers this idea was alpha-tested on instantaneously said "Wow! Cool!" without needing any further explanation." Great. So half of the knowledgeable people you spoke to about it knew what it was. A (very) rough estimate on my side tells me that anywhere between zero and five percent of the folks browsing the internet will understand it. What use is an emblem if 95% of the people who will ever see it have no clue what it means, and what it stands for?

Now, this guy also maintains the Hacker-HOWTO, jargon, and some other things. Then I found this on his "Who is ESR?" page: "I'm a long-time hacker"; and then this: Today I'm one of the half-dozen or so most influential people in that movement; in fact, a lot of people would put me among the top three, with Linus Torvalds and Richard M. Stallman."

This struck me as weird. I distictly recall reading something about self-proclaimed hackers in his howto and how real hackers don't call themselves as such, so I went looking for it. It wasn't there. Makes me wonder..

Creative Commons have a new CD out, called Copy me/Remix me. It features a variety of music from an even wider variety of artists, and it's available for download.

I've listened to the CD, it is indeed quite varied. Fifteen songs, thirteen unlike any of the others (the last two are remixes of the first song.) I have no favourite. I just like them all. In fact, I wish they would press a CD so I can buy that instead of downloading MP3s. Though I guess that's only really possible if the authors of the music provide lossless versions.

For now though, I'd be happy if they had printable cover art. I guess so far I'm stuck with creating a cover myself. Licenced with a Creative Commons licence, of course.

Checking logs for google queries is fun!

Every once in a while, I check my logs for google searches. It's really interesting to know what people google for when they get to your page. It's also really funny. Of course there's the obvious stuff, like googling for my name, e-mail address, or the guide I wrote to get win2k3 working on less than 128MB of RAM, but there are also quite a few less obvious searches. My favourites so far, in no particular order:

"nl fuck" (No. 1 hit)

"fuck lawyers" (No. 1 hit)

"difference between powerpc and x86" (Happens more often, but it's funny when someone from intel.com does it)

"wessel swimwear" (what the fuck..?)

"drool job"

I really laugh my ass off at some of the stuff people google for when they get to me. Please, keep 'em coming!

Terrorists! I thought. Nope, it was a UPS van without the familiar gold-brown markings. Bringing me not one, but two packages! One with my ueberposter (damn, it r0ks), and one with the other goodies. Typing on one of those rollup keyboards is sorta weird.

My mug is positively huge. Mega-mug is no overstatement. The diameter on the inside at the top is 10.5cm! It's in the dishwasher now, can't wait to fill it up with tea or something.

The book looks awesome. I like reading the comments at the bottom where they still used the 4-panel layout. Gives you some insight into why a certain strip is what it is.

I'm also wondering what I'm going to do with the poster. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get it framed - I just don't know how. Nor where to get a frame. Never had anything framed before. And then comes the question of how I'm going to stick it up to a wall. I wonder if anything exists to hold framed stuff up without needing to drill a hole.

So yeah, I'm thrilled.

It's every bit as good as I thought it would be. And better. The packaging is pretty cool. It folds out to become a long cardboard strip, with small descriptions for the songs and nifty artwork. You'll have to buy it and see for yourself.

I also bought Saybia's album, which seems to be titled When You Sleep. There is no indication that this is true, besides it being printed in tiny letters on the CD. But that's good enough for me.

Buying this CD took me about two hours. Only 5-or-so minutes of these two hours were spent in the store. The rest was spent travelling from my house to the store and back again. Twice. So next time I buy a CD, I will need to think of getting the discs inserted in the case. Should save me much time.

There's some really good stuff in there that I doubt you've ever heard of before. And they provide 2-minute MP3 (128kbps) and realaudio previews for most albums.

Take a listen, for example, at Daughter Darling (thanks Tim). Great voice, cool music. Very wantable. From Singapore comes Throb. Described as "the best chill music", I really dig this. Then there's Kin Za Za. Now that I love. No hesitation, order sent out straight away. I hope to get it in soon.

The company itself seems great too. Unlike most websites like these, they run on OpenBSD, don't use IE-only html (in fact, they recommend Mozilla or Opera), and don't store your credit-card info. Yes, this means you have to type it in every time you order. It also means no one can get at sensitive information.

Just got back from mob #2 in Amsterdam. We were instructed to put out a `fire`, using water from the pond in the Vondelpark. This mob, I feel, was somewhat more chaotic than the previous mob. There was much running, and much throwing of water. Not sure if anyone got wet.

Another problem with this mob was the location itself. Lots of people had trouble finding the `fire`. It might be clear on the map (yes, we had a map with the instructions), but in real life one side of the park resembles the other side like a drugged junkie does a beggar. Some simply waited for others to begin getting water and running to the `fire`.

All in all, the mob went well. Except lots of people left their bags behind at the `fire` site. This needs to stop, people. Take your stuff with you or dump it in a litterbin. Don't give flashmobs a bad reputation by leaving lots of litter behind in an otherwise pretty clean park. Don't ruin it for the rest of us.

Naturally I took some time to take pictures. I stuck 'em up here.

Why CDs these days suck.

I found a link on the HydrogenAudio Forums to an article about the LOUDER IS BETTER principle that (nearly?) all the record labels use these days. Naturally, louder is not better. It makes CDs sound flat, and generally sucky. You'll have a hard time finding a CD that is properly mastered.

If you can really hear what is in fact the total destruction of an artist's music (most people don't pay attention to it at all, they just don't know how it's supposed to sound), you should write to the artist(s). Complain about it. Perhaps they'll realise it too, and complain to the label. If you write to the label, be sure to WRITE IN ALL CAPS, the article explains why.

Anyway, the article is here: Rip Rowan: Over the Limit

Flashing mobs

Participated in my first FlashMob today. Also happened to be the first Dutch FlashMob (forum, mostly Dutch). It was, as expected, mad fun. The assignment was as follows:

18.59: Get your instructions at the specified place (which was dependent on birth date)

19.17: Go to the mob location. Do not arrive here before 19.16.
Everyone coming out of the supermarket is a `celebrity`. You have been
waiting for hours for him/her to appear. Photograph (with flash!)
 the `celebrities`.

19.21: Leave the mob location. Don't linger around.

Not quite as complex as the NY-mobs, with multiple times to do different things. But for a first DutchMob, I think it turned out awesome. I can't wait for the next mob.

So, back home.

After three weeks of h0t weather, I'm back home. The high temperature does have one huge plus, I've found out. I'm now sort-of used to it, so I can properly sleep here, where it's somewhat colder.

Three weeks of camping have reassured me how much I hate tents and anything related. The first week, at Camping Toscana Village, the damn campsite didn't even have toilet paper. You had to carry a roll of toilet paper everytime you wanted to have a good p00. Thank goodness I was within 25 steps of the toilets. The second and third weeks, at Camping Piani Di Clodia, were somewhat better in that respect. There was that little thing where there was no means of getting drunk after 11 pm, but who would want that anyway?

Anyway. Italians seem to love underwear. And especially sexy underwear. In every mall in every city, there is at least one Intimissimi store (sexy underwear). Most of the time, there's a Calzedonia (sexy swimwear) within 20 steps of it, accompanied again in close range by an Intimo3 (sexy underwear and swimwear) store. Really, it's overkill.

One thing those crazy Italians do well: they know how to make food.

PowerPC vs. x86

Nicholas Blachford has written an interesting article that discusses the difference between x86 (pentium and such) processors and powerpc processors. Sure, I've seen such articles before, but they were all biased. Even though this particular article was written by someone who works for a company that develops PowerPC based motherboards, and an accompanying Operating System, I couldn't find anything that looked biased.

If you run an x86 (pretty good chance there), and think it's perfect: read the article. If you have a ppc and want to know why it's better than the neighbour's x86: read the article. If your nickname is JJJ: read the damn article.

Thanks to Felix for the link.

XMLful goodness.

Notice anything different? Well?

Ok, it's the little blue XML button at the top right. Click that, and you'll be presented with an RSS feed of my news stuffs. Whether or not it opens in your browser or your rss aggregator depends on too many things to mention, but if you get it in your browser you can just paste the url in your aggregator. Some smart aggregators can figure the url out by themselves by just pointing them at my main page. (Straw is an example of this.)

Naturally I'll have to elaborate on this a little. RSS feeds are a way of keeping track of updates on a website, without having to visit the site every so often. Instead, you point a feed aggregator to the RSS feed, and it will download and check the feed every x minutes. It'll then update its own list, keeping track of what you've read and what not. You click on a title, and it displays a summary (or, depending on the feed, the entire article). If you want to read more, you have it open your browser. It's a great timesaver.

Oh, and yes. That button is usually orange. But since my site is blue, I got out my trusty paintbrush (of type GIMP, naturally), and painted it blue. Then I went through some hoops to get it displayed properly in all browsers (My god, IE sucks), and there it is! Magic!

While browsing through the Ageless Project site, I found this guy, who has the exact same birthday (October 4, 1984) as me! Unfortunately, he hasn't updated in a while. Still, I wonder if there are more people who share my birthday, and also have their own website with a journal of some sorts.

Looking through the Ageless Project for people of your own age is quite fun. I think it's pretty nifty to read what other people your age are writing. I found this girl called Emma's journal for example to be particularly amusing. Another girl named Faith has one of the most beautiful designs I've ever seen, even if it does say IE-only (which I haven't tested.) There's even a thirteen-year-old listed! (And a toddler, maintained by parents.)

There are really a lot of them listed, some more fun than others, some quite dead (from not updated to plain-and-simple 404s.). It's hours of fun. Oh, and they should all be free of pop-up/unders!

So. Apple has some new hardware out. I want one. 64-bit IBM PowerPC 970 goodness. They call it G5 though. Anyway, these things should really scream. And run circles around those primitive x86 things. I think the QuickSilver G4 casing is a little more attractive, but these seem to grow on you. I like the new case a lot better now than I did when I first saw it.

Their new software is looking good too. I can't wait for Mac OS X 10.3. Expose sounds like a real timesaver (as opposed to moving windows out of the way and minimizing them, trying to find the window you're looking for). And even though windows did have fast user switching first, I think Apple did a much better job at it. From what I've seen during Steve's demo, it's also a lot faster than Windows XP's fast user switching.

Well, after quite some time (really, it took a long while), I've decided to allow the general public to see this place. The previous attempt (which was quite far along) was unfortunately lost. I had pretty much everything for that in a MySQL database. Nice, but when you make a mistake backing up your databases, it means everything is gone.

So, I decided to go for Zope instead. Zope comes with the added benefit of having lots of stuff you'd want (user auth, search engines) already built in. It also has its own HTML-like scripting language, called DTML. Be sure to have a look at what Zope can do for you!

There is really only one thing I don't like about Zope: it takes up quite a bit of memory. Because of this, the first time it gets accessed in a while, swapping it into memory can take a while. I hope I'll be able to find a fix for this.

The navigation bar on your left probably seems a bit empty. This will change in the nearby future. Expect a screenshots section, a section for code I've written, perhaps contact info, etc.
